Tropical Storm Alberto

by Tammy on May 27, 2018

I’ve been watching the weather because the first tropical storm of the season is heading our way. Overnight the path shifted a bit further east, which is good for us. We were forecast to get 6-12 inches of rain over the next couple of days, but now that has come down to about 4-8, which is still a lot, but a lot less. Our flood insurance doesn’t kick in until around the seventh of June, so if we are going to get flooded out, I’d rather be insured. The first two weeks we were here, we got no rain at all, but then once it started raining, it rained nearly every day. I like the tropical nature of the storms. They pop up out of nowhere, they pour for about an hour, and then they move out, so every day we have some sun and some rain, which is perfect! Well, I should say that MOST days we get both. Yesterday was mainly cloudy and right now it is cloudy too, but it’s bright, more like filtered sunshine.I am sitting on my back porch listening to a cardinal sing. We have some resident mockingbirds here, too, and they are fun to listen to.

When we moved to Fairhope in November of 2009, we got here just as Hurricane Ida was set to make landfall in the US. Schools were closed and it caused delays in getting our internet hooked up, but overall it had very little impact on the Southern US since it weakened considerably before making landfall. It did give the Northeast quite a storm, though. It’s actually still early in the season for a tropical storm, since hurricane season doesn’t officially start until Friday, but it’s not unusual to have storms outside of the season. I just hope this doesn’t mean we will have a really active season. I’m all for a nice thunderstorm, but I could do without 80MPH winds and tornadoes.

Yesterday was a very productive day. I cleaned my curio cabinets and got all my Precious Moments figurines put away. I have a shelf near the ceiling in my living room that has an electrical outlet, so I put my Sugar Town houses and figurines up there. I have a switch on the wall that turns them on and off. I’m really excited because I’ve never, the entire time I’ve had them, been able to display them. It’s still not easy to see them, being up so high, but it’s better than any other option I’ve had before. Dan also hung quite a few pictures and he hung the curtain rod in our room, so I can now hang my curtains. I need to buy some valances for the windows in my living and dining rooms. We have blinds, but the windows look naked to me. Today my goal is to finish putting stuff away and mop my floors. I’ve wanted to do that for two weeks, but it’s been a construction zone that long, so I knew it was pointless. I also need to get a couple of papers written before tomorrow, so I need to get serious about that. I’m half way finished with this term, but it’s been a blur. I will be taking one class at a time from here on out. I don’t feel like I need to be in such a big hurry now that I am working a job I enjoy.

I hope you have a happy and safe Memorial Day!
